Hook one black and one red (that are part of the same 14/3 cable) to A1 and A2 (A travelers), and the other black and red to B1 and B2 (B travelers).Īt switchbox #2 connect the A travelers black and red to one of the 3 way switches traveler screws and the B traveler black and red to the other 3way switch. Hook the two 14/3 white wires to the incoming white (the white that is in the same cable as the incoming hot black wire) using a wirenut. There should be two other cables in that box that each have a black, a red, and a white (14/3). That incoming hot will be part of a cable that has one black and one white (14/2). (If the two common screws on switch #1 are connected together then you would not have to pigtail, and would connect the incoming hot to either one of those common screws). That black wire is the one you would pigtail to the common screw of switch #1. (Test that with a volt stick or a neon tester). If you disconnected all of the wires from all of the switches only ONE would be hot. Also, on the original switch, only 3 wires were attached - very top screw, very bottom screw, and top line.Īny thoughts? I did try reversing the one wire between the two middle screws but all that does is change which side (left or right). On the new switch, no common designator and the 4 screws are labeled A1, A2, B1, B2. 4 screws on other side, both middle screws marked 'line'. On the original switch, 2 screws on one side are marked common. On the doujble switch, neither switch individually does anything - but if one switch is switches, the other will turn everything on. Upstairs 3-way for back flood also doesn't work unless 1at floor switches are both turned on. Now, ALL the flood lights are controlled by a single switch, and the back flood light can only be turned on upstairs when the back flood lights are turned on downstairs. Ordered a Leviton double 3-way switch and wires it exactly as I took the old one out. Upstairs, one single 3-way switch also controls one of the back flood lights and another single 3-way controls the front flood light.īack to thebfirat floor double switch - recently I noticed one of the flood lights would only work with the switch switched half way. Each switch controls one of the back flood lights. On 1st floor, there is a double 3-way switch (2 switches in one 'slot' of the box, one on top of the other). ![]() I have 3 separate flood lights outside, 2 in back of house 1 in front.
